LUMIN Schools Director of Teacher Development Julieane Cook shares what it's like to work at LUMIN and why teachers should consider applying for a position with this high-performing network of schools. This former principal highlights her own experience transitioning from the public school sector to a private choice school. In the eight years I've been with LUMIN I have been a principal and then now I serve as the Director of Teacher Development over those years we just had a lot of growth a lot of change we really tried to look at all of our different systems and models look at our teaching staff what do they need what do our students need and we tried to make improvements as best as we can. I think LUMIN is a great place to start your career as a brand new teacher we just have a lot of systems in place a lot of supports to help you get started we start first with a lot of training up front in August just what the classroom structures going to look like typically in college you don't learn a lot about classroom management and we focus a lot of our time there so that you feel more ready and able to think of different classroom management systems that can work for your students We have just started a teacher advancement plan at LUMIN and what that plan does is it really helps our teachers look at their career their goals for thier career what they want to get better at and learn more about whether that is a leadership role within a school or maybe it's becoming a master teacher maybe it's becoming better Mentor for new teachers there's a lot of different ways and pathways but a teacher can grow in their own career. I was just meeting with a teacher recently and we were just going over her reading workshop time and how to take her first graders to the next level she's got all of the basics in place so I said "You know what, I think they might be ready for this next step. Can I just show you this resource?" and she was like "Yes this is exactly what I was thinking they needed" let me email it to you print it out let's go let's get them into the folders let's get them started on this reading strategy and she implemented immediately because she knew it was a tip that could take her teaching to the next level, but ultimately take her kids to the next level. What's really great about LUMIN being a Network, well there's several reasons that make it really great, I think coming from a public school district there are a lot of things that the district can help you with but it also removes you from that District office and what happens day-to-day at LUMIN we really really try the network team really tries to be in the building supporting helping teachers and helping Leaders with whatever they might need whether that's Student and Family services whether that's our curriculum and academic team whether it's gathering data helping with those things there's all kinds of ways that our Network can help support I think one of the biggest things that LUMIN is really really really values and is trying to use and get better at is gathering feedback from staff. We gather feedback from all staff every single year twice a year and that feedback really helps us to grow and to learn and to adapt and so if there's something then as a network we need to do better or as a a school we need to do better we really try to listen to all of our staff members teachers, cafeteria workers, admins and whatever feedback they have for us we really take that in and think of action steps of how to improve I think that really sets us apart Whether you are new to teaching or you've been teaching a while or you've been thinking maybe I can make a difference in the life of a child you should work for LUMIN Schools so apply today!
